Sunday's game Vs Sussex saw us travel to south Bronx (to Soundview park). All of us arrived at the park to see our opposition short by 6 players. The game got underway at bout 1:30 and the captain lost yet another toss and CUCC were put into field. Sussex opener started very cautiously going at bout 2 runs an over thanks to some quality bowling by Madhura and Sunil. Sunil was unlucky for quite a few missed the edge and the ones that did find the edge went over the fielder or fell short. Madhura at the other end had the batsmen in tangles and was denied a plumb leg before. A double change bought Dileep and KD onto bowl next. Dileep bowling with great control and tied up the batsmen who now decided to fledge their arms. While KD saw a swirling chance put down. However Dileep was first to strike taking a nice catch off his own bowling. Their #3 gave Dileep a sharp return chance which he couldn't cling onto but Arvind did a great job of cleaning up and running the #3 out. While Madhura took a well judged catch in the deep off of KD to get rid of their #5. Soon the wickets started falling as Sussex tried to up the tempo with Arvind pulling off a great catch at long off to dismiss their top scorer. Sunil came back to knock off their next highest scorer. This bought Prabhu in who was on a hat trick. His first ball was hit in the air only to fall agonizingly short of the fielder. We had a couple of stumping/runouts turned down thanks to the leg umpire standing next to the boundary line. Prabhu got into the thick of the action immediately, with Michael snapping up 2 stumpings, and Prabhu was on a hat trick again. This time around their #10 smacked one first up (hat trick ball), which almost took Venu’s head off at silly point. Prabhu soon wrapped it up and Sussex was all out for 128. They didn’t believe in taking the singles on a heavy outfield, which had more trees inside the playing area than outside and with a lot of unsupervised kids running around.
We started off with Prabhu and Sriram and Prabhu managed to keep the first ball out but got bowled soon to leave us one down. This bought Michael P. off of a half century from last game and he lasted all of 2 deliveries before he was cleaned up. A few jittery moments and KD announced his arrival with a glorious drive for four. Soon we were off with KD scoring freely and Sriram jumping around like a cat on a hot tin roof, yet effective in rotating the strike and getting KD all the strike. KD and Sriram kept taking the 1’s and 2’s and rotating the strike intelligently while putting away the bad balls. KD reached a well deserved 50 and with only 20 runs to win was called back to pavilion to give other batsmen a go. Sriram threw away all his hard work by trying to g for his 50. While Ajay and Sayan saw us home safely without any further mishaps.
Excellent batting by KD and Sriram who put on close to a 100 run partnership. Sriram playing a much more mature innings this time around. We dropped a few catches which against any other team would have cost us the game. Luckily this time around we managed to make sure it didn’t cost us much. Dileep bowled an extremely good spell but was very unfortunate not to pick up more wickets. Prabhu as always somehow never gets to finish his spell, yet again he could only 3 overs before the game was over. Good win for CUCC and onto the next game boys. Good Job everyone, excellent team work with everyone chipping in.
The biggest event was in the middle of our batting we had some ppl running into the ground with one guy being beaten up by 3 other guys being thrown to the ground pummeled and then being cut up by razors bleeding all over the damn place. It was a nasty site and KD/Sriram decided it was time we went home early and they made sure we got home early by knocking off the runs.
