Dear CSC,

Dedicated to all of you brave souls enduring another week of midterms. We feel your pain.  Cheer yourself up by coming to the coolest outdoor event of the semester: Night Market 2003!

What's Night Market?  Night Market is a recreation of the street fairs and carnivals of China and Taiwan. Different clubs (from AAA's Fear Factor, to Club Bangla, to CSC--but of course) will be selling delectable food & drinks, setting up hilarious games, and giving stunning performances like our very own Lion Dance, as well as Ho-eup, a spirited dance troupe which wants to bring Korean culture to Columbia and beyond.

There's also a chance to show your love for some of Columbia's most popular people in our Pie Toss, by throwing some of that great stuff into their faces.

Night Market 2003 happens on October 24th, Friday, at Low Plaza.

5.30 PM to 9:30 PM.

1. CSC Night Market

Like watching The Bachelor or Paradise Hotel? �If so, come to the West
   End on October 23rd to bid for a date with 10 eligible bachelors and
   bachelorettes, whose identities will soon be disclosed. �Winners will

KSA will donate ALL proceeds to Harlem Children's Zone, a charity

4. APIA U: Leadership 101

5th Annual Series of Leadership Trainings for all college Asian Pacific Islander American students

Rutgers University, New Brunswick Campus, NJ�November 15-16, 2003
�
The mission of these leadership trainings is to provide Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) students an environment to develop leadership and organizing skills that are relevant to APIA students on campuses and in communities.�The 1-1/2 day training will bring together students throughout the region to share experiences and develop tools to effectively serve as a catalyst for change and activism.

The training is FREE. To ensure that all registrants are committed to attending the entire day and a half and to avoid last minute cancellations, we ask for a $15 deposit to hold each seat.�All trainings will be limited to 60 participants.�Your check will be returned to you at the end of the training on Sunday.�Breakfast, lunch, and a light reception on Saturday will be provided.�Students are responsible for their own transportation and accommodation needs.�

5. APEX Mentoring

^^ Do you play chess? paint? play soccer?...
	^^ How about sharing your abilities with some 5th graders?

AAA is looking for anyone interested in being part of a NEW mentoring program. Through the Asian Professional Extension, Inc. (APEX), AAA is helping start an after school program at a public school for Asian American children in the 5th grade. The pilot program is currently being developed, so YOUR input is especially important. The preliminary outline for the program focuses on extracurricular workshops/activities and one-on-one mentoring, and it will run once per week or once every other week in P.S. 1.

6. Harlem Education Fund

The Harlem Educational Activities Fund, Inc. (HEAF) is a non-profit organization whose goal is to help Central Harlem and Washington Heights children from under-resourced neighborhoods develop the attitudes and skills and access the resources that will enable them to lead satisfying and productive lives.

We are currently in immediate need of volunteer tutors who specialize in calculus, physics, chemistry and the humanities for our high school program.

7. AAA Teensgiving Volunteering

Now in its 5th year, Teensgiving is a fun, one-day event that gets teens excited about community service. Following the New York Cares model, over 500 teens gather at the Y for a kick-off event and then disperse throughout the city to over 40 agencies where they do meaningful volunteer projects, such as reading to young children, cleaning parks, fixing playgrounds, visiting the elderly, serving food at a homeless shelter, and designing Thanksgiving cards for hospitalized children. You will serve as an adult chaperone to the teens, and you will also get to volunteer with them at your site.

Teensgiving will take place on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9 from 8am-2:30pm (at the latest). Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Volunteers must register in advance, so e-mail Emily at ebt2001@columbia.edu by Friday, October 24 if interested.

8. "Asians are killing the LPGA", Stephenson

A sampling of Jan Stephenson's comments in the Golf Magazine article, for which she later apologized: "This is probably going to get me in trouble, but the Asians are killing our tour. Absolutely killing it. Their lack of emotion, their refusal to speak English when they can speak English. They rarely speak. We have two-day pro-ams where people are paying a lot of money to play with us, and they say, 'Hello and goodbye.' Our tour is predominantly international and the majority of them are Asian. They've taken it over."
