Columbia Scholastic Press Association presents Crowns for 1983

These 1983 Crown Awards winners represent editions published during the 1981-1982 academic year.

Columbia Honors Outstanding School Publications

(New York City) Thirty-nine student publications, from New York to California, have earned highest honors from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) of Columbia University. The CSPA selected the publications for its distinguished Gold Crown award, an honor reserved for only a handful of the 2,571 publications submitted for evaluation.

Since it first offered the critical judging service in 1925, the CSPA has rated newspapers, yearbooks, and magazines from elementary and high schools as well as colleges and universities, according to a 1000-poirit scale.

Publications entered in the Contest/Critique must receive a Medalist rating and all of the All-Columbians to be a Gold Crown Nominee. All-Columbians are earned when the publication scores more than 95 percent of all the points within the sub-categories, which range from design to creativity. This year's winners were chosen from a field of 92 nominees.

The winners included eight college and 31 secondary school publications.

The announcement and presentation of the awards came during ceremonies at the CSPA's 59th Annual Convention at Columbia's New York City campus. The convention attracted 2,931 student journalists and faculty advisers from 33 states for three days of participation at 235 workshops and seminars.

"This honor reflects outstanding qualities that belong to a category above and beyond that of technical excellence. The winning staffs have contributed distinctive and creative efforts to the field of student journalism," according to CSPA Director Edmund J. Sullivan.

The selections were based on critical evaluation of the 1981-1982 academic year issues.
