Summer Journalism Workshop - Class Description

Yearbook-All-in-One

CLASS DESCRIPTION

In this course, students will learn all facets of production necessary to produce a successful yearbook. By the end of the week, students will learn how to choose and execute a successful theme/concept for their yearbook, how to write opening copy, design basics such as dominance, design hierarchy and typography, how to create designs using InDesign software, photography basics, specific writing techniques such as piece of the pie and marriage of elements to insure the unification of all facets of production.

Sunday, June 24

Class 5-7 p.m.

  • True Colors
  • Goal-setting for the week

Monday, June 25

Class 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

  • It’s All in the Opening (Opening Copy)
  • Theme presentation
  • HW: Work on opening copy; start theme planning 

Class 1 - 4:30 p.m.

  • Writer’s Workshop (style, captions, feature story)
  • HW: Feature story due 

Tuesday, June 26

Class 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

  •   Design Basics/Photography presentation

Class 1 - 4 p.m.

  • Design No. 1
  • HW: Finish designs

Wednesday, June 27

Class 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

  •   Design No. 2 

Class 1 - 4 p.m.

  • Design No. 3 w/ emphasis on Marriage of Elements
  • HW: Finish designs 

Thursday, June 28

Class 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

  • Work on theme packet

Pete LeBlanc is in his 19th year of teaching and 17th advising publications. He is in third year at Antelope High School in Northern California where he advises the Titanium yearbook, The Titan Times newspaper and the Channel 5 Titan TV News. The Titanium yearbook and The Titan Times newspaper are 2010 Crown Award winners.
