The idea of Columbia Science Review (CSR) formed
in the summer of 2003, in a Yahoo group by Daniel Tannenbaum and
Nan Ma, the founding Editor-in-Chiefs of CSR. Their junior and
senior years were devoted to form CSR under the cause of enhancing
the public knowledge of science and technology in Columbia community.
In spring 2004, the first issue of Columbia
Science Review was printed into hard copies. Also, from spring
2004, CSR has been recognized by Columbia University as an official
student group (advised by Columbia
University Student Development and Activities and listed under
Activities
Board at Columbia recognized groups).
As of fall 2006, students from Columbia College,
the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences,
Barnard College, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Graduate
School of Journalism participates in CSR. The Columbia Science
Review is archived in Low Memorial Library.
CSR will strive its best to elevate knowledge and
awareness of science and technology in the Columbia community.
This summarized vision is the spirit of any activities that are
initiated and sustained by CSR.

When CSR was founded, many science groups existed
in Columbia. but no science publications that can bring science
and general public closer. Therefore, CSR has focused on founding
a scientific publication created and read by Columbia community.
Due to subject nature of scientific writing (that general public
feels uncomfortable reading scientific articles full of jargons
and technicalities), CSR projected two different types of science
publications :
- Publication featuring articles written in easy
English for broader audiences.
- Publication featuring articles written in scholarly
research article format.
From spring 2004, CSR has published the
Columbia Science Review featuring scientific articles
written, reviewed and edited by Columbia students. Printed Columbia
Science Review is distributed to current Columbia students,
faculty members and prospective students. The Columbia Science
Review has been featuring articles ranging from easy-to-read
reviews on scientific topics to student research articles written
in scholarly format.
Upon successful publications of the Columbia
Science Review, CSR launched the Journal of Columbia
Science Review to complement the Columbia Science Review.
The Journal of CSR will serve as the publication of type
2, for the students willing to publicize their research activities
and scientific insights written for the potential scientists looking
forward to research opportunities in science and technology.
CSR also offers cross-referenced publishing opportunity
for students: two articles published, one in the Columbia
Science Review for broader readership and the other in the
Journal of CSR in scholarly journal styles with unabridged
scientific details. For more information on the publications,
please visit [Publications] webpage
and read the guidelines.

The organizational structure of Columbia Science Review is modular:
there are boards, committees and task forces.
The Executive Board of CSR is comprised of representatives of
all boards, committees and task forces in CSR. Executive board

- The Committee of Public Relations promote the public awareness
of CSR and its upcoming events.
The Editorial Board of the Columbia Science Review publishes

science publication featuring articles that are written for Columbia
community members of any academic background. There are three
boards in the Editorial Board of the Columbia Science Review:
Board of Editors, Board of Reviewers, and Board of Layout and
Graphical Artists.
- The Board of Editors enhances the readability of the articles
in the Columbia Science Review so that it can be easily
read by general public. The Editors of the Columbia Science
Review comprises the Board.
- The Board of Reviewers ensures the scientific integrity of
the articles so that the article contents are presented accurately.
The Reviewers of the Columbia Science Review comprises
the Board.
- The Board of Layout and Graphical Artists presents the articles
in clear and visually appealing manner. The Layout Designers,
the Photographer, and the Graphical Advisers comprises the Board.
The Editorial Board of the Journal of Columbia Science Review
will publish the Journal of Columbia Science Review,
a peer-reviewed full-color online science journal featuring articles
written by students pursuing professional career in science field.
There are three types of editorial positions in the Editorial
Board of the Journal of Columbia Science Review: Editors,
Reviewers, and Layout Designers.
- Editors manage the editorial process and makes editorial decisions
on the articles submitted to the Journal.

rigor.
