BACKGROUND OF SHOCC
What is a Hate Incident?
An incident in which a perpetrator's conduct was motivated by hatred, bias, or prejudice against an individual or group of people.
What is a Safe Space?
A space that embraces individual difference, sustains inclusion, and cultivates a campus that is free from bias. A safe space is an avenue in which faculty, staff, and students can help achieve these goals. A safe space serves students through advocacy, community building, and education.
Who are we?
In response to hate incidents in Fall 2005, a group of students (SHOCC) got together to create a list of demands which we presented to the president of the university, Lee Bollinger. These demands came from several large town hall meetings, and many meetings with other students. Last week, after 3 months of stalling Lee Bollinger finally met with us, but was relatively unresponsive to the demands set forth. Unproductive conversations with Columbia administrators have been happening for years, while the incidences of hate have been increasing on our campus. We believe that the fulfillment of each of our demands will create a more safe and inclusive community for all people.
