Worship Services
During the academic year, James Memorial Chapel is the setting for regular chapel worship
Monday through Thursday at noon. Union Seminary - with its different cultures,
different denominational traditions, and different theological perspectives - is
a microcosm of the world. Nowhere is this diverse community brought together more
discernibly than at worship, where the seminary community gathers to
articulate as well as listen to these multiple voices. No classes or official meetings are
scheduled during the noon hour so that the entire community can attend services.

James Memorial Chapel
|
Upon entering James Memorial Chapel, one notices an absence of fixed pews and no permanent pulpit. These architectural elements have been replaced by moveable chairs and lecterns. Complemented by theatrical lighting and a wireless sound system, James Chapel becomes a highly flexible space that can accommodate a wide range of expressive worships .
The Worship Office has a wealth of resources to use in worship planning. Its staff includes two space coordinators who work closely with planning groups to develop the environment for each day.
Artists-in-Residence Penna Rose (director of the Seminary Choir), M. Roger Holland, II (director of the Gospel Choir), and Chris Johnson (organist) provide musical support to services. Other performing artists have included African drummers, a bluegrass band, jazz ensembles, rappers, actors, poets, and dancers. |

Lampman Chapel, a smaller, more intimate space, is available to the seminary community around the clock for meditation and prayer. Students and staff organize a variety of worship services on a regular basis throughout the week, supplementing the larger services of James Chapel. |
