Intercollegiate Weight Room

Columbia University Strength & Conditioning Program


Safety Operations of Facility:

1) Use and/or occupation of the strength room is restricted to the following individuals: a. members of intercollegiate athletic teams if supervised by a coach b. any coach of a intercollegiate athletic team c. strength and conditioning coaching staff and sports medicine/training staff members d. former members of intercollegiate athletic teams (that have completed eligibility) if supervised by a coach and by permission only.

2) No user and/or occupant is allowed to use the strength room alone. All athletes must be supervised by a coach.

3) No horseplay, reckless activity, or running is allowed in the strength room.

4) All equipment must be used properly. Any questions of proper equipment use will be addressed by the strength and conditioning staff.

5) Any problems with equipment must be reported immediately to the strength staff. Damaged equipment should not be used and reported immediately to the strength staff.

6) All weight plates are to be replaced on plate racks when not in use. Weight plates and barbells are not to be thrown or dropped. Weight plates and barbells must be kept off the floor at all times.

7) All dumbbells are to be replaced on dumbbell racks when not in use. Dumbbells are not to be thrown or dropped.

8) All users and/or occupants should keep body parts away from moving equipment (cables, chains, pulleys, weight plates/stacks, etc.)

9) All users and/or occupants should keep body parts off all mirrors and walls.

10) All users are required to wear athletic gear (subject to approval by strength staff). A list of clothing allowed is as follows: a. athletic shirt(s); T-shirt, sweatshirt, golf shirts b. athletic shorts and/or sweatpants c. athletic shoes; artificial turf, court, cross trainer, and running shoes d. no metal rivets, snaps, or zippers are allowed, no "street" clothing is allowed

11) All personal belongings are to be kept in a locker room or in a assigned location in the strength room (bookshelf/coat rack area).

12) No spitting is allowed in the strength room (except into trash receptacles).

13) No consumption of food and/or drinks or containers of food and/or drinks allowed in the strength room.

14) All items used during workouts must be kept in the proper location and replaced upon completion (strength workout cards, recording pencils, weightlifting straps, weightlifting belts, etc.)

15) Thermostats are to be operated by strength staff only.

16) Fire escape doors are to be kept closed and secure unless used as a fire escape.

17) Any injuries or illness in strength room should be reported to the strength staff immediately.

Exercise Safety

1) All exercises are to be performed properly. Any questions of proper exercise execution will be addressed by the strength staff.

2) No exercises and/or activities that the strength staff feels are unsafe or careless are to be performed in the strength room.

3) Spotting is required on the following exercise: a. squats b. bench press c. incline bench press d. overhead press e. other exercises as deemed necessary by strength staff f. anytime a user and/or occupant request's to be spotted

4) Each exercise requires spotting techniques specific to that exercise.

General spotting guidelines are as follows:

a. users and/or occupants are responsible for obtaining spotting while exercising

b. the spotter(s) should:

1. be alert and concentrate on individuals and equipment involved

2. know how many repetitions are being attempted

3. have a solid stance and use both hands

4. keep hands clear of equipment racks

5. be prepared for anything to happen

c. both the user and spotter(s):

1. should make sure the correct amount of weight is loaded properly

2. need to stay with equipment until the exercise is finished and equipment is safely returned to a resting state

d. any question of proper spotting will be addressed by the strength staff
