OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF LATINO CAMPUS GROUPS
February 2004
The Student Organization of Latinos hereby formally declares its
solidarity with the recent mobilization on campus to combat racism and
other forms of bigotry visible in our own Columbia community. Although
particular events and publications have spurred this movement, we
believe these are only reflections of a greater systemic problem
concerning racism, homophobia, and misogyny, among other manifestations
of ignorance and disrespect. Even attacks not specifically targeting
the
Latinocommunity affect us as a marginalized group, both on campus and
in U.S.
society in general.
We ask that both students and administrators address these concerns in
a
manner that will benefit all Columbia University students, faculty,
staff, administrators, other affiliates, as well as the surrounding
community outside the gates. We are in coalition with various groups,
including BSO, USCC, SPEaK, AAA, Native American Council, NSBE, and CU
Concerned Students of Color, to aid in bringing about both immediate
and
long-term changes that affirm a stronger commitment to actualize
"diversity" on campus, promote an atmosphere of mutual respect between
each and every person, and create a more comfortable and inclusive
space
for the entire Columbia community.
