Columbia Ballet Collaborative
CUPAL Member Group
Columbia Ballet Collaborative (CBC), founded in 2007 by five professional dancers enrolled at Columbia University, is comprised of students from all of the University’s undergraduate colleges, and affiliates, some of whom are current or former professional dancers. CBC is student-run and directed and its members have danced professionally with such companies as Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Ballet West, Boston Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, New York City Ballet, Miami City Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Orlando Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, and Zurich Opera Ballet. CBC holds auditions to select students to perform in our biannual performances that include works by both professional and student choreographers.
Auditions
Saturday, September 6 at 1:00pm-4:00pm
Studio 1, Barnard Hall, Barnard College
The audition will consist of a ballet class followed by pointe work and contemporary choreography. The pointe section will be optional; however, please remember pointe shoes if you wish to be considered for pieces on pointe. Choreographers and/or choreographer assistants will observe the audition in order to cast their pieces. Casting will be announced via email within the week following the audition. Unfortunately, CBC is not able to cast all whom audition, but we do try to cast as many dancers as possible within choreographic demands. Any current student of Columbia University, including all affiliate schools, is eligible to audition. In addition, any student who wishes to be cast in CBC’s fall 2014 performances is expected to audition, even if they have danced with CBC in the past. If you have a conflict and are unable to make the audition but still wish to be considered in casting, please email [email protected]. Weekly CBC rehearsals are held on Saturdays and/or Sundays.
Performances
Our Fall 2014 performances will take place on Saturday, November 15th at 2pm and 8pm at MMAC.
Other Ways to Get Involved
The Columbia Ballet Collaborative offers a free open ballet class every Saturday morning in Barnard’s Studio 1 from 10:30-12p.m. during the semester. Located in Barnard Hall, the class is taught on an Intermediate/Advanced Level, and is welcome to all the University’s Undergraduate, and Graduate Students of every level. To be added to our Open Class Mailing List please email us at [email protected] Columbia Ballet Collaborative’s Outreach Program was created to bring ballet to the Columbia-Harlem community, increase diversity among those involved in the art form and, expand the role of dance in education. Classes are designed to have students learn basic ballet steps and terms with added information about the creative components that go into making a ballet. Through lecture demonstrations and class series, CBC dancers provide participating students the opportunity to explore new movements and gain knowledge about the creative process that encompasses ballet. Reach out to [email protected] or [email protected] if you are interested in helping out.
