Urbanization in the Developing World: Perspectives on the Individual

CUPID thanks the conference organizers Victoria Lowerson and Aynsley Toole.

Over 100 students and professionals from the tri-state area attended CUPID’s annual conference for a multidisciplinary look at an issue of cross-cutting importance in international development: urbanization.  A variety of experts shared their academic, practical, and experiential knowledge.

The conference explored urbanization from a variety of perspectives, including several panels and a keynote presentation:

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
 
Robert Neuwirth

A graduate of Columbia University’s School of Journalism, Robert Neuwirth is the author of a recently published book entitled Shadow Cities: A Billion Squatters, A New Urban World.

He gave a powerful account of the experiences and lessons that went into writing his book, as he spent months living in slums in four major urban centers around the world undergoing rapid urbanization – Istanbul, Mumbai, Nairobi, and Rio de Janeiro.

The day concluded with a wine and cheese event where the conference attendees and speakers could continue the discussion and start new conversations and relationships.
