DEVELOPMENT FORUM: NOV. 21, 2005

Dams: The Good, the Bad, and the Micro
Hosted by the School of Engineering

Dams are an example of infrastructure projects that impact the daily lives of all of us.  There are positive outcomes, such as power and irrigation.  And negative results, such as forced migration.  In recent years alternatives such as small-scale dams and micro-dams have been proposed. What does the future hold?

This forum included presentations offering:

  • an overview of hydropower development (download)
  • an assessment of the environmental clearance process in India (download)
  • an explanation of the alternative model of micro-hydropower by Engineers Without Borders, a group implementing such a project in India
  • a discussion of the public health concerns that dams create
