DEVELOPMENT FORUM: APR. 19, 2006

Weather Forecast 2036...Hurricanes...Tsunamis...Our World in Climate Change
Presented by the Earth Institute, Earth Co, and CUPID in honor of Earth Day 2006

A discussion on climate change and its effects on our world today and tomorrow. Come hear scientists give a vivid and practical explanation of what will happen if climate change continues unabated.

Featured Speakers:

Adam Sobel, Associate Professor in the Departments of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics and Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University

Yochanan Kushnir, Doherty Senior Research Scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the Director of the Cooperative Institute for Climate Applications and Research.

Speaker Biographies:

Adam Sobel is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics and Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University, and an Associate Research Scientist at the International Research Institute for Climate and Society. He received his Ph.D. in meteorology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997 and began working at Columbia and IRI in 2000 on the modeling of atmospheric and climate dynamics and tropical meteorology. His upcoming paper in the Journal of Climate describes some very interesting computational experiments concerning equatorial "hot spots" and the manner in which they affect the large-scale temperature distribution, and one of his current projects concerns the statistical analysis of tropical cyclone tracks. He teaches a course in the Physics of Fluids in the fall and a course in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics in the spring.

Yochanan Kushnir is the Doherty Senior Research Scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the Director of the Cooperative Institute for Climate Applications and Research. He sits on the US Climate Variability and Predictability Atlantic Sector Implementation Panel and the US Global Ecosystems Dynamics Scientific Steering Committee. His upcoming paper in the Journal of Climate concerns the physical basis for predicting seasonal-to-interannual climate variability in the Atlantic Sector, and he will be teaching a course this summer at the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs in Water Policy.
