Decades later, they meet by chance in New York and begin a lifelong friendship. Part story telling and part conversation, Two Men Talking is an unscripted performance that shares their real stories of harassment, homophobia, racism, and HIV/AIDS. Audience members are invited to share as well. Hosted by ICAP and Rockafellar Foundation Children on the Front Line: An Evening With Ishmael Beah November 18, 2009 Columbia University’s UN Studies Program Working Group with the Human Rights Working Group invites you to an event on child soldiers and children in armed conflict. The event celebrates the passage of Security Council Resolution 1882, which addresses the continued use and abuse of children in armed conflict globally, urges all parties to conflict to respect the rights of children and further calls on states to end impunity and prosecute those who are responsible for the egregious crimes committed against children. "Microfinance, Social Enterprise, and the Law" Symposium November 17, 2009 As part of a 2-day collaboration with NYU’s Law & Social Entrepreneurship Association, social entrepreneurs, lawyers from Chadbourne & Parke, Latham & Watkins, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, and students will discuss microfinance from a legal point of view. These professionals will describe their experiences and debate the merits of microfinance. Wine and cheese will follow. This Symposium is co-hosted by the CSIL, CUPID, the Reynolds Program, Career Services, CBLA, InSite, and Student Senate. Improving Maternal Outcomes in Tibet October 26, 2006 On Monday morning, October 26, the Department of Epidemiology and CUPID had the pleasure of introducing Dr. Kunchok Gyaltsen and his work to the Columbia community at the Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Gyaltsen is a Tibetan medical doctor, Buddhist monk, and leader in Tibetan rural development. "Gender, Peace, and Security" Conference October 23, 2009 At this critical time, with conflict on the rise, there are growing concerns over how gender is being considered, or sometimes overlooked, in issues of global peace and security. As this October marks the 9th Anniversary of Security Council Resolution 1325, it is nearly a decade since the participation of women in peacebuilding and negotiation has been formally and internationally recognized and encouraged. The hosts and sponsors of the conference on "Gender, Peace, and Security" feel that it is timely and important to mark this important anniversary with an event addressing the changes that have been made as well as those that have yet to be addressed involving both the inclusion of women and gender minorities and the inclusion of gender-related issues into the foreground in the field of peace and security. Deutsche Bank Microcredit Development Fund November 30, 2006 Deutsche Bank has joined with progressive clients of its private bank to establish the Deutsche Bank Microcredit Development Fund as a financial tool to fuel the growth and reach of microfinancing programs around the world. The fund provides loans to non-profit microfinance institutions or non-profits that are evolving into regulated entities. David Gough will speak about the Fund’s progress, the promise of microcredit and the importance of corporate social responsibility. Co-sponsored by CUPID, the Responsible Economic Development Group, Barnard EARTH, and Engineers Without Borders Official Investigators Speak on UN Oil-for-Food Scandal November 29, 2006 Mark Califano and Jeffrey Meyer co-led the official investigation of the United Nations Oil-for-Food Programme and co-authored a recently released book on the findings, entitled Good Intentions Corrupted: The Oil for Food Scandal And the Threat to the U.N. Come hear the story of how a program meant to provide humanitarian relief to the Iraqi people ended up enriching Saddam Hussein instead, and learn what this scandal means for the United Nations. CUPID is hosting this event in partnership with the Global Grassroots Leader in Residence Program at Rutgers University, which aims to forge links between these grassroots leaders, the academic community, and student and community activists. Environmentally Responsible Business: A View from the Trenches October 10, 2006 Mr. Lawrence D. Malizzi, P.G. Director, WSP Environmental Strategies How do environmental concerns affect the bottom line for industry? In what ways are businesses exposed to environmental liability? What solutions exist to minimize risks and mitigate damage? What does it mean for the private sector to provide responsible stewardship of natural resources, and to what extent is global industry doing so? What career opportunities exist for individuals to promote environmentally responsible business practices? Come hear an experienced environmental consultant share his knowledge and stories from helping global industry address these issues. He will also discuss careers in environmental consulting. Lawrence Malizzi, a professional geologist, has over sixteen years experience in due diligence, insurance underwriting and claims support, oil spill response management, and Natural Resource Damage Assessment. China Blue: A night of film, food, discussion, and action… April 26, 2006 China Blue (2006, 87 minutes), shot clandestinely in China, is the inside story of a blue-jeans factory where workers are trying to survive the harsh working environment. The film paints a nuanced, tender and ultimately moving portrait of the daily lives of the young workers, mostly rural women, who make clothes for multinational retail corporations. The film brings the complex issues of globalization to the human level. “China Blue makes a stronger case against worker exploitation than any news item could.” – Variety. International Women's Day Women Engaged: Powerful Multipliers in US Human Rights Organizing March 6, 2006 Roundtable in Celebration of International Women’s Day and the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Mr. Avina answered questions from the audience and talked about career strategies and opportunities for lawyers interested in international development, as well as the global fight against poverty. Mr. Avina holds a JD from Harvard Law School, MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, MA in International Development Education from Stanford University, and BA in International Relations & Latin American Studies from the Catholic University in Peru. Displaced Persons in Colombia October 28, 2005 Margarita Muñoz (Colombia) has worked extensively with vulnerable populations in Colombia, especially women and children displaced by the armed conflict in Bogota and Cartagena. As the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom’s Colombia Project Coordinator she has worked to develop and promote women, peace and security advocacy tools. |
