Environmentally Responsible Business: A View from the Trenches

October 10, 2006

Mr. Lawrence D. Malizzi, P.G.
Director, WSP Environmental Strategies

How do environmental concerns affect the bottom line for industry? In what ways are businesses exposed to environmental liability? What solutions exist to minimize risks and mitigate damage? What does it mean for the private sector to provide responsible stewardship of natural resources, and to what extent is global industry doing so? What career opportunities exist for individuals to promote environmentally responsible business practices?

Come hear an experienced environmental consultant share his knowledge and stories from helping global industry address these issues. He will also discuss careers in environmental consulting.

Lawrence Malizzi, a professional geologist, has over sixteen years experience in due diligence, insurance underwriting and claims support, oil spill response management, and Natural Resource Damage Assessment. He has managed projects across a wide range of disciplines -- from groundwater and soil remediation to major oil spills to hazardous waste management -- for clients in the insurance, property development, industrial, maritime, oil and gas, and financial sectors.  He has lived and worked in both the US and Europe.

China Blue: A night of film, food, discussion, and action…
April 26, 2006

China Blue (2006, 87 minutes), shot clandestinely in China, is the inside story of a blue-jeans factory where workers are trying to survive the harsh working environment.  The film paints a nuanced, tender and ultimately moving portrait of the daily lives of the young workers, mostly rural women, who make clothes for multinational retail corporations.  The film brings the complex issues of globalization to the human level.

“China Blue makes a stronger case against worker exploitation than any news item could.” – Variety.  China Blue won the Amnesty Human Rights Award at the International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam.

Post-screening discussion and how you can get involved, featuring:

Andrew J. Nathan, Class of 1919 Professor; Chair, Department of Political Science, Columbia University; Board Member, China Labor Watch and Human Rights in China.

Christine Clarke, China Program Coordinator, National Labor Committee.
