With support from the Ford and MacArthur Foundations, this video project documents the experiences of one public housing community as it moves through the demolition and relocation process. “Dis-Location” documents the final year of existence of a public housing building, based in the Robert Taylor Homes development in Chicago’s South Side. The objective of the documentary is to illuminate the processes by which tenants experience the gradual demise of their collective identity as “Robert Taylor Homes tenants” and forge a new life in new surroundings. It is intended to help the wider public understand the strengths within public housing communities and the ways in which public housing residents (and their non-leaseholding friends, family, and neighbors) work together, cooperatively and conflictually, in the relocation process.
