The Columbia
University Cycling Team is a club sport offered to both men and
women who are full time students of the university and its affiliates.
The team is operated and managed by the club's members under
the supervision of Columbia University's Club Sports Program and
is not governed by the NCAA, but by the National Collegiate Cycling
Association (NCCA). All collegiate cycling teams and the NCCA are
overseen by USA Cycling , the national cycling federation.
Every team in
the country is assigned to one of 12 conferences that cover their
region. Columbia is part of the Eastern Collegiate Cycling
Conference (ECCC) - the most competitive conference in the United
States. The ECCC includes 30 teams from states along the northeast
coast from New Jersey to Maine. The road cycling competitions
take place on most weekends from from March to May. The races
are divided into categories so that riders of similar experience
can race with their peers. The mens' fields are divided into
four categories (A through D) while the smaller womens' fields are
divided into two (A and B). For information on moving between the
fields and other specific rules, please visit the ECCC's
website.
The cycling team is active throughout the entire academic year.
We train together and work on our riding skills during the Fall
semester. During the beginning of the spring semester we hone our
conditioning and during the last part of the spring we race.
Fall is a great time for newer riders to learn the roads of the
area, build a conditiong base, and learn the nuances of the sport.
The cycling team also plans activities during the fall to
get to know the interested riders and newer members.
