Columbia Stays on Top at the Boston Beanpot

April 7 – The team continued it's winning ways this past weekend at races hosted by Boston-area schools. With one race to go, the Lions are tied with Penn State for second of the 72 teams in the conference. And they are maintaining a tiny lead in the Ivy League Cup over Yale. The strongest performances of the weekend, once again, belonged to Maggie Shirley. She swept her events and took top points in all but one of the primes (in which she got second). Her level of control over the field in the criterium, which she won WITHOUT getting out of the saddle!

Many of the Lions' points also came from the team time trials. The men's C team came tantalizingly close to the top spot, missing first by two seconds. Despite being directed off the course, the men's A team was strong enough to get fourth. And, the men's C time trial used their experience and deft skills to get fifth in their category.

Over this season, the Lions have been unstoppable in the criteriums. This weekend's racing was no exception. Shirley was the only winner, but the Lion's depth and tactics kept them in the top 5 in every race!

Next weekend the team will travel to Dartmouth for the Eastern Championships. A lot is up for grabs. The season-long battle for second with Penn State will come to a head. And the home of the Ivy League cup will be decided. But the lions already have achieved their most important goal of the year: they have already accumulated enough points to qualify for the collegiate national championships!
