What is Dance Dance Revolution?
Dance Dance Revolution, also known as DDR, it is a dancing simulation game.   Unlike most video games, there is no controller to play the game with.   Instead you play with your feet.

How to play
This is the dance pad, or platform.  This is the two player version, one player would be on the left and one on the right.  Steps never require you to switch pads.

The four arrows on each side correspond to the four arrows at the top the picture below (by the 09).

When a scrolling arrow, such as the green one near the "10", line up perfectly with the top arrows, press the corresponding arrows on the dance pad.

The life bar
The red and yellow bar at the top of the screen is your life bar.   When you "miss" a step or get a "boo", your life bar goes down (in this case nothing would dissappear).  If your life bar goes down completely, you fail the song.  In some cases, the song will end as soon as this happens, but it depends on the machine.  Either way however, you will not be able to play an additional song on the current game.

Score

Your score, which is at the bottom of the screen, is based on how many perfects to greats you get.  Perfects are worth more than Greats (a Great is shown as it is being hit in this picture).  Your score is also dependent on what version of DDR you are using.  Score plays no factor in whether you pass or fail the song, although after you fail a song, your score will not go up any significant amount.

Listen to the Music

The music of the song and the steps correspond to each other.  You will have to step on arrows to the beat of the song.  This makes it difficult to play DDR if the volume is set low, or there is a lot of noise around.

Concept

The concept of how to play is very easy, but actually performing songs is a challenge. For a few tips and pointers on how to start out, check out Dyo's guide to basic tech to get a handle on the basics of the game.
