The 2003 APDA Novice Tournament will be held on September 12 and 13 at Columbia University in beautiful New York City, perhaps APDA's most convenient location. Two outstanding demonstration rounds, one featuring current debaters and one featuring dinos, will show the new APDA generation exactly what excellent debate looks like, while seminars on the PM, LO, and member speeches will ensure that they learn precisely what each position's responsibilities are. The tournament will feature four in-rounds breaking to semi-finals, restricted to only novice debaters to ensure that rounds are as hospitable to newcomers as possible. The tournament will be tabbed at unthinkable speeds as always to guarantee that even the most impatient novice is never bored. A deep judging pool of many dinos and current debaters from Columbia and the rest APDA league will be encouraged to provide constructive oral critiques following every round to provide the novices with valuable individualized advice and instruction. As always, novices and judges will dine on an outstanding buffet banquet and a breakfast of authentic New York bagels. Friday night, the tournament will provide a festive party to last until the wee hours. All schools are welcome to come to the tournament with competitors and judges. Please register online at our automated registration page
The cost for participation in the tournament will be $75 per team cash/check/debt cancel or $80 per team billed. In addition, we will include a discount of $10 per team if all the school’s teams arrive 45 minutes or more before the demonstration round, and $5 per team if a school arrives between 15 and 45 minutes early. Judges attend free of charge.
Maps of the Columbia campus will be provided with tournament packets, but if you would like to have one ahead of time, you can download one at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/aboutcolumbia/maps/images/columbiamap.jpg. Interactive maps are also available at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/aboutcolumbia/maps/.

The following directions will get you to Columbia:
By Car from the North:
Take the New York Thruway (I-87) or the New England Thruway (I-95) south
to the Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95) in the direction of the George
Washington Bridge. Take the exit for the Henry Hudson Parkway south (the
last exit before the bridge). Exit the Parkway at West 95th Street and
Riverside Drive and follow the directions for parking below.
By Car from South or West:
Take the New Jersey Turnpike north or I-80 east to the George Washington
Bridge. As you cross the bridge, take the exit for the Henry Hudson
Parkway south. Exit the Parkway at West 95th Street and Riverside Drive
and follow the directions for parking below.
By Train or Bus:
Trains to New York arrive at Grand Central Station or Pennsylvania
Station, while buses stop at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where a
visitor can take either public transportation or a taxi north to the
campus. From Penn Station, the best public transportation is to take the
1 subway train up to 116th st. From Grand Central, the best
option is the S subway train across town and then the 1 subway train up to 116th st.
By Air:
For visitors coming into LaGuardia, Kennedy, or Newark airports, taxi
service is available to the campus (about $20 from LaGuardia, at least $40
from Kennedy), and there is bus service to Grand Central Station and the
Port Authority Bus Terminal. Bus service directly from LaGuardia airport
to Columbia, the M60 city bus, is also available.
By Car from the New York Airports:
LaGuardia: Take the Grand Central Parkway east to the Whitestone Parkway
(I-678). Follow it across the Whitestone Bridge and onto I-95 south.
Follow “By Car from the North.” Kennedy: Take the Van Wyck Expressway (I-
678) to the Whitestone Bridge and across. Get onto I-95 south and follow
the directions above under “By Car from the North.” Newark: Follow
directions under “By Car from the South or West.” In any case, follow the directions for parking below.
By New York City Public Transportation:
Five bus lines (M4, M5, M11, M60, M104) and one subway line (the No. 1 local) serve the Columbia neighborhood. The M60 bus is a direct link
between campus and LaGuardia Airport. The Columbia stop is 116th Street.
Do not use IRT express trains Nos. 2 and 3, which follow a different route
and do not stop at Columbia University; if you do, be certain to transfer
at 96th Street to the No. 1 local.
Parking Instructions:
Double-park or find a parking space temporarily.
Unload your and your team's belongings, leaving one person in the car.
Send the team to Lerner Hall (walk through the 116th st. gates,
turn right, and proceed to the large, tacky, modern building with the enormous wall of glass. You couldn't miss it if you tried).
Park at any of the following locations:
- 512-520 Garage, located at the corner of 112th Street and Amsterdam
- Hospital Parking, located on 114th street between Amsterdam and Broadway
- Riverside Church Parking Garage, located on 120th Street between Claremont Avenue and Riverside Drive
