Why Go Greek?

By joining a Greek organization on campus, you can open many new doors. From a social point of view, one becomes part of an ever-growing Greek community, which brings the opportunity to interact with members of both one’s own sorority and all of the other sororities and fraternities on campus. Whether one goes to a party, a philanthropic event, or a late-night study session, there are always new people to be met. The Greek community is diverse, and you are bound to meet many people who share your interests.

Each sorority offers many opportunities to lead as well, whether one chooses to lend a hand in larger tasks planning an inter-Greek event or coordinating recruitment, or in smaller ones, such as designing a Homecoming t-shirt or helping out with a bake sale.

Another upside of joining a Greek organization is the networking opportunities. All sororities have members who have held many internships in many different fields, and sisters are willing to lend a hand and put in a good word for each other.

In addition, Columbia Greeks are given many ways to give back to the community. Each sorority on campus has its own cause, and every Greek organization does its part to support the others’ causes. However you decide to take part in Greek life, you are bound to come out of college with lasting friendships with your sisters and fellow Greeks.

By going through Recruitment, you are able to meet the sisters of all four Panhellenic sororities and decide which is the best fit for you. The weekend will be sure to be busy: the four main events will take place over three days, and during each event, you will be able to see both what you can give to, and take from, each sorority. There is one guideline for how to act during recruitment: be yourself! The sisters of Delta Gamma are so excited to meet you, so make sure to come out for Formal Recruitment 2009.

The schedule is as follows:

Saturday:

Held from 6:00pm-8:30pm on February 7th, the first event of recruitment is a meet and greet. After being divided into recruitment groups and meeting the Membership Recruitment Counselors (known as MRCs; these are members of the Greek community who have temporarily disaffiliated from their sorority in order to offer unbiased help to those going through recruitment), Potential New Members (PNMs) will spend 30 minutes with each sorority, getting to know the members of all of them. You will learn about what it means to be a member of the Greek system, including Panhellenic involvement on campus and the benefits of membership on campus and nationally.

Sunday morning:

The second event of recruitment, a Philanthropy brunch, will take place on February 8th from 10:00am-2:00pm. Each event will be forty minutes long, and PNMs will visit a maximum of three sororities. You will learn about the organization that each sorority has nationally chosen to support. Delta Gamma’s is Service for Sight, a foundation that focuses on helping to stop blindness before it starts and making the lives of those who have lost their sight better. Whether by funding genetic research or Braille books, or by giving time to help men and women acquire the skills they need to live independently or to record books for the hearing impaired, DGs have given over $200,000 and 96,000 hours per year to help those in need.

Sunday night:

Development Night, the third event of recruitment, will take place from 7:00pm-10:00pm, also on February 8th. On this night, Delta Gamma will try to tell you about what exactly makes the sorority unique. You’ll learn about new membership education, leadership development activities, awards, chapter programming, the academic, career, and personal benefits of sorority life and – most importantly – the meaning of sisterhood to all of us. DG is full of young women who are all extremely different, and cover the full range of personalities, idiosyncrasies, interests and talents. Even so, we are all bound together by our sorority, in ties stronger than perhaps any of us imagined when we first stepped into the recruitment room. Each event will be fifty minutes long.

Monday night:

On February 10th, from 8:00pm-11:00pm, the final event recruitment will take place. Preference Night is an evening where the sisters of DG will be able to show you some of the rituals that are unique to the sorority. PNMs will visit only one or two sororities this night. A sister with whom you have bonded will “pref” you – that is, you will spend part of the evening with her alone, giving you a chance to have a long conversation about Sisterhood, Delta Gamma, and her own experience as a member.

After this party, each PNM will fill out a card for the Panhellenic Council that indicates their preference of sorority. That same night, each sorority will also submit a list of PNMs whom they desire as members. The Panhellenic Council will match PNMs to sororities as best it can.

Tuesday night:

On February 11th, Bid Day will take place. During the afternoon, PNMs receive a formal bid from one sorority. After receiving a bid, PNMs may formally accept or decline the bid. On Bid Night, all of the sororities gather on College Walk with their new members. You will also learn to which sorority each MRC and Panhellenic Council member belongs.
