Language Placement Tests for Fall 2006:

All students wishing to enter the language program at any level beyond the first semester of the elementary level must pass a language placement test before registering. Language placement exams are held on the Friday (schedule below) before the first day of classes.

Students who have been absent from the campus for one semester or more must take a placement test before enrolling in a language course beyond the first term of the elementary level.

Lecturers in Chinese

The Chinese Language Program of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures invites applications for three full-time lecturer positions in modern Chinese, beginning Fall 2007. Language Lecturer is a professional track at Columbia University. These positions are renewable. Requirements for applicants: native competency in modern Chinese with standard pronunciation; specialization in linguistics, applied linguistics, or language pedagogy; demonstrated ability to teach college-level Chinese and to prepare teaching materials independently and collaboratively. Duties will include active participation in team work and program affairs and participation in the department’s summer Chinese language programs in China. The application dossier should include: a letter of application in English; a brief statement by the applicant on language teaching; a self-introduction in Chinese (handwritten in traditional characters); CV and three letters of recommendation (preferably two of which should be from language teaching professionals). A 30-minute video tape demonstrating the applicant’s teaching styles and a sample of research work are strongly recommended.  The committee will begin considering applications November 10, 2006 and conduct preliminary interviews at the annual meeting of Chinese Language Teachers Association. The search will remain open no less than 30 days from the date of posting. Assistant Professor Position In Modern East Asian Visual and Popular Culture

The Department of East Asian Studies at Columbia University seeks to fill a beginning junior position in Modern East Asian Visual and Popular Culture, to begin in September 2007. PhD as of the date of employment is required. Candidates with broad-ranging geographic and topical scope within and beyond East Asia are welcomed, but expertise in Chinese-language film is preferred. This search resumes one begun in 2004-2005, but candidates who applied then and remain interested should reapply. Japanese History Faculty Position (Open Rank)
The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time faculty position, rank open, in Japanese History, open as to period. An excellent record of teaching and scholarly publication is necessary for a senior and desirable for a junior candidate. For junior candidates, Ph.D. must be in hand by no later than May 2007. The appointee will teach at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and must be prepared to work with fellow faculty in the development of Japanese studies research, teaching, and programming at Columbia. Oratory and Rhetoric In China and Japan

Prerequisites:  Some prior knowledge of Chinese or Japanese history or literature. 
This seminar course explores rhetorical traditions of Early China and Japan, examining types of speech situation such as instruction, persuasion or quite simply court entertainment portrayed in a wide range of early Chinese and Japanese texts.

Women in Japanese Literature:  Gender, Genre and Modernity
3 pts. T. Suzuki, T 2:10-4
An examination of major prose works of early modern and modern Japanese literature (from 18th century to the present) with particular attention to issues of genre and changing gender and social relations as represented in these literary texts.  All readings are in English translation.

Jaret Weisfogel Fund:
In coordination with his family, the C.V. Starr East Asian Library at Columbia University is establishing a fund in memory of the late and sadly lamented Dr. Jaret Weisfogel.  As many of you know, while he was working toward his PhD in Chinese intellectual history and while teaching at Columbia in a post-doc position until his untimely death, Dr. Weisfogel made the Library his second home. His family will be donating materials from his personal collection to the Library, and the Library is having a book plate made in his honor, which will read:
