Information of Local Transportation in New York City

  1. Columbia University

Columbia University is located in the upper west side of Manhattan, New York City. Its official address is 1140 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10027. But it is much easier to remember its location as the intersection between West 116 Street and the Broadway. Cab drivers know exactly where it is. If you choose to stay at Teachers College, Columbia University, you only need to walk four blocks to reach the conference sites. If you book your room at other hotels, try to stay on the west side of the Manhattan.

Directions to Columbia Campus:

  1. From Airports to Columbia University

a. For international travelers: There are two international airports in New York area. One is the JFK international airport and the other is Newark International  Airport. JFK is located in Queens Borough of NYC. Taking a cab would be the most convenient way to reach Manhattan from the JFK. It costs $40 or more to reach any destination in Manhattan from the JFK.  Subway is another option though it is much more slower and inconvenient. You can take the airport shuttle to Howard Beach station to board A Train which takes you to 42nd Street/Times Square where you transfer to No. 1 subway train, upper town direction, and get off at 116 Street Station(also called Columbia University Station). Newark airport is located in the city of Newark, New Jersey. In addition to cab, you can also take train to reach Manhattan from the Newark Airport. The train will take you from Newark to the Penn Station in Manhattan from there you can transfer to No. 1 Subway train, upper town direction, to reach Columbia at the 116 Street Station.

b. For domestic travelers: the closest airport to Columbia University is the LaGuardia Airport. It costs $27 or more to reach Columbia by cab. You can also take bus No. M60 which takes you directly to the west gate of Columbia at 116 Street. If you fly in through JFK or Newark, please read information above for international travelers. Driving to NYC might be easy, but parking is expensive and inconvenient in Manhattan.

  1. Travel inside the city of New York

Riding subway is the most convenient and economic way to travel in New York. To reach Columbia University, you need to take No.1 subway train which runs through Manhattan west site. Subway system map is available at each subway station. The map is very useful. Bus is also very convenient. If you wand to do some sightseeing, taking bus is ideal for that purpose. The ticket for subway and
bus is transferable within an hour. No matter how far your destination is the cost of a one way ticket is $2. There are a number of buses stop at Columbia. Of course, you can always take a cab. It is much easier to get a cab during weekend than week days. And when the weather is bad, cabs are in high demand.

  1. Conference sites

Since we need at least four parallel panels to accommodate all presenters, at least four conference rooms are needed. And it is hard to find them in a single facility. We have reserved five electronic classrooms for the conference, two of them are inside the Schermerhorn Hall, two are in the Hamilton Hall and one is in the Kent Hall. Fortunately, Columbia’s campus is relatively small, the walking distance between these buildings is within 150 meters. You can enter Columbia’s campus from either Broadway or Amsterdam Ave.
