Columbia University (campus
map) is located on
Broadway and 116th Street in Manhattan (Morningside Heights), New
York. All conference activities will take place in Kent Hall.
TRAVEL INFORMATION
The most convenient form of transportation within New York City and to
the Morningside campus generally is public transportation. Traffic
congestion is one obstacle to driving to campus, and parking is
another; in the Morningside Heights area parking is in very short
supply. There is no parking available on campus.
Below is general information on public transportation to the
Morningside campus, public transportation to and from airports and rail
connections, and driving directions and parking information.
Specific websites and phone numbers are listed as well.
New York City Public Transportation to the Morningside Campus:
Five bus lines (M4, M5, M11, M60, M104) and one subway line (the Nos.1
or 9 local) serve the Columbia neighborhood. The M60 bus is a direct
link between campus and LaGuardia Airport.
The Nos. 1 and 9 subway trains stop at the 116th Street and Broadway
subway station.
The M4, M60, and M104 stop at the 116th Street and Broadway bus stops.
The M11 stops at the 116th Street and Amsterdam Avenue bus stops.
If you travel via the IRT express trains Nos. 2 and 3, which follow a
different route and do not stop at Columbia, be certain to transfer at
96th Street to the No.1 or 9 local.
Train or Bus
Trains to New York arrive at Grand Central Station or Pennsylvania
Station, while buses stop at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where a
visitor can take either public transportation or a taxi north to the
campus.
Airports
For visitors coming into LaGuardia, Kennedy, or Newark airports, taxi
service is available to the campus (about $20 from LaGuardia, at least
$40 from Kennedy), and there is bus service to Grand Central Station
and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Bus service directly from
LaGuardia airport to Columbia, the M60 city bus, is also available.
Airport-specific information follows:
From La Guardia Airport
Metro Transit Authority (MTA). A great option if you will be traveling
light, the Transit Authority runs M60 bus service from La Guardia right
past Columbia University along Broadway and down to 110th St. At only
$2.00, the M60 is the least expensive transportation option between
Manhattan and La Guardia. Please note that you will need exact change,
a metrocard (purchasable in most subway stations).
Taking a taxi from La Guardia will cost approximately $15 + toll + tip.
Car service is another transportation option. You will need to call
ahead of time to schedule a pick-up. It is advisable to accept a ride
only from a driver carrying a sign with your name on it. While we
cannot endorse any specific company, the following are estimates of the
cost of car service from La Guardia to Morningside Heights. Please note
that tolls, tips and parking are not included in the cost.
∑ Carmel Car Service: $25.00
∑ Tel-Aviv Car Service: $25.00
Shuttle service by Super Shuttle runs a van service all day. Pick-up
time is every 20 to 30 minutes and varies with the terminal. The travel
time is approximately 45-60 minutes. There is no need to reserve a
place on the shuttle; you can place a courtesy call at ground
transportation to alert a representative (look for the blue van).
Passengers can be dropped off in Morningside Heights. The cost is
approximately $15-$19 one-way.
From JFK Airport
Airtran Monorail and subway: Take Airtran monorail (stops at all JFK
terminals) to the Howard Beach Subway Station, where you can board the
“A” subway line. Take this all the way to the “59th St / Columbus
Circle” stop in Manhattan. Transfer to the 1/9 uptown train and
get off at “116th St / Columbia University” stop. Subway fare is
$2.00; Airtran fare is $5. Travel time is approximately 60-75
minutes from JFK to mid-Manhattan. See below for website links.
An alternative is to take the “A” subway further north to 125th Street
in Manhattan. From 125th, you can catch the M60 or M11 bus into
Morningside Heights. In this weather, however, waiting outside
for a bus is less than ideal.
Taxi: $45 + toll + tip.
