1:30 落語(5年生) Rakugo, comic dialogue: Fifth-year students perform traditional Japanese comic storytelling.
1.アンドレア・ムイ (Andrea Mui) 「権助(ごんすけ)堤灯(ぢょうちん)」“Gonsuke Joochin”
"Gonsuke Joochin" is a rakugo story about a master who gets rejected by his wife and his concubine. On a dark and windy night, the wife tells her husband to stay the night at the mistress’ house since she is worried about the mistress being alone when there might be the possibility of a fire. Touched by his wife’s thoughtfulness, the master travels to the mistress’ house with Gonsuke, a rather blunt servant who helps him to carry the lantern. Yet, the mistress returns the favor and asks her master to return to his wife. With both women insisting him to stay with the other, the master goes back and forth between the houses.
(The classic story has been written for a modern audience by the rakugo performer, Andrea Mui.)
2.アルフレッド・ラム (Alfred Lam)「本膳(ほんぜん)」“Honzen”
"Honzen"is a story about a group of workingmen and simpleminded Yotaroh that are invited to a proper banquet by the landlord. Since they are unfamiliar with the formalities, they approach the knowledgeable elderly in the neighborhood and ask for help. As the event is tomorrow, the elderly suggests that they should imitate everything he does on the spot. However, during the meal, besides the real etiquette, the workingmen also misinterpret the trivial mistakes of the elderly as part of the formalities.
(The classic story has been written for a modern audience by the rakugo performer, Alfred Lam.)
3.イウェン・シェン (Yiwen Shen)「寿(じゅ)限(げ)無(む)」“Jugemu”
"Jugemu" is a story about a ridiculously long name. A man could not think of a suitable name for his newborn baby boy, and so he went to the temple and asked the chief priest to think of an auspicious name. The priest suggested several names, beginning with jugemu. The father could not decide which name he preferred, and therefore gave the baby all of the names.
