Welcome to Japanese Literature at Columbia

This is the Japanese Literature site for Columbia University. The program is based in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, but it reaches out to various other departments and programs. Japanese literature is conceived here in an interdisciplinary framework that overlaps with the fields of history, art history, theater, media (particularly film), religion, anthropology, and other disciplines. Particular attention is given to cultural and literary theory in a transnational, comparative context. The program thrives within a large a larger network of East Asian literary and cultural studies. The program stresses both modern and classical literature as well as issues such as text/image theory. The site is designed to aid students and faculty at Columbia in particular but most of it is also open to the public.
