Pedagogical Principles

In the last several years, the language teaching profession has seen increasing reliance on proficiency-oriented instruction in the United States and elsewhere, based on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Guidelines.

The ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines constitutes the first systematic framework for describing, in detail, progressive language proficiency from the minimal (novice) level of function to the professional (superior) level, in the four skills - speaking, listening, reading, and writing - in a linguistically global context.

The Korean language program of Columbia University is not an exception to this approach. The teaching methods, curriculum design, teaching materials, instruction planning, and class activities are being reorganized and redirected toward a proficiency-based approach. The program adopts the proficiency-based approach as its guiding principles.
