East Asian Studies Undergraduate majors or concentrators who opt to spend their junior spring abroad must take the required disciplinary and senior thesis related courses in the spring of their sophomore year (contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies for details).

The Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies is a rigorous academic year program for students wishing to do advanced work in Japanese language and cultural studies. Study with Japanese students and live with host families for deeper integration with local community.
Targeting advanced Chinese speakers, Columbia University in Beijing at Tsinghua University is a unique opportunity to directly enroll in a broad range of Tsinghua University courses with Chinese students and the support of an onsite director and program tutors.
For undergraduate and graduate students:
The Columbia University Summer Language Program in Beijing provides intensive Chinese language classes at all levels and the option to live with a host family for the duration of the program.
Advanced language students focus on business Chinese on the Columbia University Summer Business Chinese and Internship Program in Shanghai and apply their studies on supervised month-long internships at multinational companies.
The KCJS Summer Program in Advanced and Classical Japanese offers intensive training in advanced and classical Japanese for highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students who have completed at least three years of Japanese or the equivalent.

The Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Study in Yokohama Columbia University is a member of the consortium of universities which sponsors the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, Japan. The center provides intensive training in advanced spoken and written Japanese.
The Inter-University Program for Chinese Language study in Beijing and Taipei Columbia University is on the Inter-University Board for Chinese Language Studies, which provides intensive programs in intermediate and advanced Chinese at National Taiwan University in Taipei and Tsinghua University in Beijing.
