Joint Economics-Philosophy Major


Requirements for the Joint Major in ECONOMICS and PHILOSOPHY


Core Requirements in Economics Department

The following 3 courses are required:

  • W1105 Principles of Economics
  • W3211 Intermediate Microeconomics
  • W3213 Intermediate Macroeconomics


Core Requirements in the Math and Statistics Departments

•  MATH V1101 Calculus I and MATH V1201 Calculus III.
•  STAT W1211 Introduction to Statistics B (or a higher level statistics course such as SIEO 4150)

Economics Electives

Students must take 2 electives in the department of economics chosen from the following list of courses:

•  W4020* Economics of Uncertainty and Information

•  W4080 Globalization, Incomes and Inequality

•  W4211* Advanced Microeconomics

•  W4213* Advanced Macroeconomics

•  W4228 Urban Economics

•  G4235 Historical Foundations of Modern Economics
or BC3041 Theoretical Foundations of Political Economy

•  G4301 Economic Growth & Development

•  W4321 or BC3029 Economic Development

•  W4329 Economics of Sustainable Development

•  W4345 World Economic Problems

•  W4370 Political Economy

•  W4400 or BC3019 Labor Economics

•  W4415 Game Theory

•  W4438 Economics of Race in the United States

•  W4465 Public Economics

•  W4480* Gender and Applid Economics

•  W4500 or BC3047 International Trade

•  W4615 Law and Economics

•  W4625 Economics of the Environment

•  W4750 Globalization and its Risks

•  BC3011 Poverty and Income Distribution

Notes:

• * Requires additional prerequisites - please check the bulletin  Students must have completed all prerequisites before taking the course.

•  If a student takes an economics elective without having completed micro and macro then that course will not count towards the major. All courses in the department with the exception of accounting require both micro and macro.

•  Senior seminars are not electives.

•  The department and Barnard offer several of the same courses (listed below). If a student takes the same course in both schools then only one of the two will count as an elective.

•  W4329 and BC3039 Economics of the Environment
•  W4400 and BC3019 Labor Economics
•  W4500 or BC3047 International Trade
•  W4505 and BC3038 International Money
•  G4235 and BC3041 Historical Foundations of Modern Economics

This list is not necessarily exhaustive and the department reserves the right to deny credit for any other courses where the subject matter overlaps too much.


Philosophy Requirements

Required Courses:

•  PHIL C1010 Methods and Problems of Philosophic Thought
•  PHIL V3411 Symbolic Logic
•  PHIL V3701 Moral Philosophy
•  PHIL W3551 Philosophy of Science

One of the following two courses:

•  PHIL G4561 Probability and Induction
•  PHIL G4565 Rational Choice


Seminars

Every student must take the seminar ECPH W4950 Economics and Philosophy Seminar.


Grading

Students must receive a grade of at least C- in order for the course to count towards the major (including statistics and math). Only W1105 Principles of Economics may be taken Pass/D/Fail.
