5. "My Columbia Economics Education: Long-Term Business Success and =20
Wrestling with the Gorilla (WM)" with Miles Freedman CC'69, MBA'72

Time and Place: Wednesday, April 9 at 6:30 PM (Faculty Room, Low Librar=
y)

The event is brought to you by the Columbia Economics Society, =20
the Columbia Economic Forum and the Department of Economics. Seating =20
is limited. RSVP to econ-rsvp@columbia.edu. Reception to follow. =20
Appropriate attire is recommended.

After receiving his BA from Columbia in 1969, Mr. Freedman taught =20
economics and mathematics at the Dalton School in New York. In 1971 he =20
enrolled in the Columbia Graduate School of Business, where he quickly =20
realized that the typical corporate career would not be a good fit. =20
Consequently, Mr. Freedman chose to follow his heart and prepare =20
himself to play the game of real-life Monopoly. Because the option for =20
a real estate major was not yet available in Columbia's MBA program, =20
Mr. Freedman was the first student to propose, create and implement a =20
major in real estate within the MBA program.

After graduating with an MBA from Columbia, Mr. Freedman spent his =20
first years in the real estate industry working in New York for Arlen =20
Shopping Center Company. Through his companies GFD Management Inc. and =20
GFD Associates Inc., Mr. Freedman has developed more than 3,667,098 =20
square feet of shopping centers, with 212,000 additional square feet =20
of development to commence in 2008. By maintaining a responsible =20
growth strategy and a dedication to developing quality shopping =20
centers, Mr. Freedman and his successor companies enjoy a record of =20
being in business over 32 years.
