Institute for Comparative Literature and Society
(ICLS) was founded at Columbia in 1998 to promote a global
perspective in the study of literature, culture and its social context.
Located in the Heyman Center, ICLS administers the interdepartmental
undergraduate and graduate programs in comparative literature, and it
draws its faculty from a wide variety of disciplines, both from inside
and outside of literary studies proper. Each year the Center sponsors a

Institute for Research on Women and Gender
usually sponsors a Women's Studies Seminar each year as well as public

Medieval Guild is open to all graduate
students interested in medieval studies; it functions somewhat like a
dissertation seminar at all stages of advanced study. Students
participating in the Medieval Guild workshop MA Essays and conference

Queer Studies Group (QSG), founded by
graduate students in 1990, provides a forum for interdisciplinary
discussion of lesbian and gay studies. It meets biweekly, at the
Institute for Research on Women and Gender, for colloquia that focus on
specific readings, lectures by speakers from inside and outside
Columbia, film screenings, and discussions of group members' works in
progress. Past speakers have included Eve Sedwick, Douglas Crimp, and
