PLACEMENT & EMPLOYMENT

Placement
Complementing Columbia's Center for Career Services, the Department maintains its own placement services for graduate students who are nearing the end of their doctoral work and are seeking academic appointments. Students in their fifth and sixths years are urged to participate in the Fall placement workshops even if they do not plan to apply for jobs during the current year. Workshops meet weekly during Fall semester to discuss the application process and its essential elements: the curriculum vitae, cover letter, dossier, writing sample, and interview. Mock interviews for job seekers are held in early December.

To sign up for the Fall 2011 placement workshops, or if you have any questions, please contact the placement officers, Professors Sarah Cole (sc891@columbia.edu), James Eli Adams (jea2139@columbia.edu) and Cristobal Silva (cs2889@columbia.edu) as well as Virginia Kay (vek2001@columbia.edu).

MLA Job Information
The MLA Job Information List is available online from mid- September on at www.mla.org. The list is updated weekly and job seekers are urged to consult it frequently. The department has a username and password, which are necessary to access the list and which are available to all members of the department. The MLA JIL lists full-time jobs in four-year colleges and universities.

Temporary and Odd Job List
Temporary positions and odd jobs which come to the Department will be emailed to all active students as they come in. A variety of editing, proofreading, and tutoring jobs are typically available in addition to courses at Barnard or other nearby universities.
