DEPARTMENTAL WRITING PRIZES
Submissions for the prizes must be turned in to 602 Philosophy Hall

DEADLINE: Friday, March 12, 2004 by 5:00 p.m.
  • Each prize requires a separate submission with a separate cover sheet.
  • The same material can be submitted for more than one prize.
  • The Department will accept no more than one submission per person for each prize.
  • A separate information sheet is available with guidelines for the Brownstein Prize (for work in prose fiction or playwriting by a Columbia College senior).

For all CC undergraduates:

Barratt-Brown Memorial Prize—for critical writing in any scholarly field
DESCRIPTION OF THE WRITING PRIZES [including restrictions on individual submissions]

Van Rensselaer Poetry Prize: A prize awarded to a Columbia University degree candidate who is deemed the author of the best example of English lyric verse.
SUBMISSION RESTRICTIONS: no more than 3 poems, totaling not more than 10 pages

George Edward Woodberry Poetry Prize: Established by the Woodberry Society as a memorial to George Edward Woodberry. Awarded to an undergraduate student of the University, including Barnard College, for the best original poem. Offered every other year. Not offered in 2004.

Academy of American Poets Poetry Prize: Award for the best poem or group of poems (unpublished) written by a College or Geeneral Studies undergraduate degree candidate.
SUBMISSION RESTRICTIONS: but no more than 5 poems, and totaling not more than 10 pages

The Bunner Award: In memory of Henry Cuyler Bunner, this award recognizes Columbia degree candidates who present the best essay on any topic dealing with American literature. Senior essays on an American topic will automatically be considered for this award.

Philolexian Prize: An award for fiction, essays, memoirs, poetry, plays, film scripts, or translations of literature written by an undergraduate in Columbia College.
SUBMISSION RESTRICTIONS: submission may include work in any one or more of these genres, but is limited to one work in each genre, except poetry, where the limit is 5 poems; prose submissions are not to exceed 35 pages

Arthur E. Ford Poetry Award: For the best collection of poems by an undergraduate in Columbia College. An annual gift from Mrs. Doris M. Ford in memory of her husband.
SUBMISSION RESTRICTIONS: but no more than 5 poems, and totaling not more than 10 pages

Seymour Brick Memorial Prize: Awarded to the College undergraduate who submits the best one-act or full-length play. The award was established by Mrs. Seymour Brick and her son in honor of their husband and father who graduated from the College in 1934.

Charles Paterno Barratt-Brown Memorial Prize: Awarded to a Columbia College senior who is judged to have excelled in critical writing in any scholarly field. Established by his parents and his sister in honor of Charles, who graduated from the College in 1983. Senior essays will automatically be considered for this prize.
