KEEPING INFORMED

Majors E-mail List
New majors should contact the Department Administrator, Pamela Rodman, to request that their name be added to the department's majors e-mail list. Important information is regularly conveyed to majors via e-mail.

Website
Majors should rely on the departmental website as the most accurate source of information about course offerings. The listings in the printed Schedule of Classes and in the school bulletins are sometimes inaccurate; the department’s listings are continually updated and reflect whatever changes occur after these other publications have gone to press. Such changes are also highlighted at the “Courses” section of this site, under “Course Changes and Updates.” Students are also encouraged to regularly check the “Announcements” section of this site for information about special events, such as faculty and guest lectures.

Department Office
Majors and concentrators are always welcome in the English Department office in 602 Philosophy Hall. On the left before entering the office are two bulletin boards where material relevant to undergraduates is posted: internships, summer programs, writing contests. Inside the office (on the left counter past the mailboxes) are a variety of printed forms, such as course and distribution lists, major worksheets, and sample majors. The Department Administrator, Pamela Rodman, is in the office directly behind the reception area in 602 Philosophy; students should feel free to drop by at any time if they have a routine question.

Meetings
The department schedules several meetings each year to address various concerns of undergraduates. At the beginning of the fall there is an information session about the Senior Essay Program. Mid-fall, usually in late October, there is a meeting at which several faculty members speak with students who are interested in applying to graduate school. In the spring, the department holds an open house for newly declared majors.

Student Groups
At various points in the department’s history, English majors have formed groups to facilitate a greater sense of community among majors. There is currently no active group of this kind, but the department is interested in encouraging and supporting such activities. Interested students should contact one of the department’s undergraduate advisors.
