DEPARTMENTAL WRITING PRIZES

Submissions for writing prizes must be turned in to the English Department Office, 602 Philosophy Hall, by the following dates:

DEADLINES


FOR CREATIVE WRITING: Monday, March 1, 2010 by 2 p.m.

FOR CRITICAL WRITING: Monday, April 5, 2010 by 2 p.m.
  • You will find below links to cover sheets for prize submissions.
  • You should collect all the material you are submitting for consideration for the Creative Writing Prizes (except for the Brownstein) into one packet with one cover sheet; you then submit FOUR copies of the packet to 602 Philosophy Hall by the deadlines listed above.
  • A separate information sheet is available with guidelines for the Brownstein Prize (for work in prose fiction or playwriting by a Columbia College senior).
  • Senior Essays are automatically considered for applicable prizes (no separate submission need be made).

For CC, GS and Barnard undergraduates:
Woodberry Poetry Prize—for an original poem [Not offered in 2008]
For CC and GS undergraduates:
Academy of American Poets Prize—for a poem or group of poems

For all CC undergraduates:
Brick Memorial Prize—for a one-act or full-length play Philolexian Prize—for fiction, essays, memoirs, poetry, plays, film scripts, literary translations
For CC SENIORS only:
Brownstein Prize—for prose fiction or playwriting (special instructions)

DESCRIPTIONS OF THE WRITING PRIZES

Van Rensselaer Poetry Prize: A prize awarded to a Columbia University degree candidate who is deemed the author of the best example of English lyric verse.
SUBMISSION RESTRICTIONS: no more than 3 poems, totaling not more than 10 pages

George Edward Woodberry Poetry Prize: Established by the Woodberry Society as a memorial to George Edward Woodberry. Awarded to an undergraduate student of the University, including Barnard College, for the best original poem. Offered every other year. Not offered in 2006.

Academy of American Poets Poetry Prize: Award for the best poem or group of poems (unpublished) written by a College or General Studies undergraduate degree candidate.
SUBMISSION RESTRICTIONS: but no more than 5 poems, and totaling not more than 10 pages

The Bunner Award: In memory of Henry Cuyler Bunner, this award recognizes Columbia degree candidates who present the best essay on any topic dealing with American literature. Senior essays on an American topic will automatically be considered for this award.

Philolexian Prize: An award for fiction, essays, memoirs, poetry, plays, film scripts, or translations of literature written by an undergraduate in Columbia College.
SUBMISSION RESTRICTIONS: submission may include work in any one or more of these genres, but is limited to one work in each genre, except poetry, where the limit is 5 poems; prose submissions are not to exceed 35 pages

Seymour Brick Memorial Prize: Awarded to the College undergraduate who submits the best one-act or full-length play. The award was established by Mrs. Seymour Brick and her son in honor of their husband and father who graduated from the College in 1934.

Charles Paterno Barratt-Brown Memorial Prize: Awarded to a Columbia College senior who is judged to have excelled in critical writing in any scholarly field. Established by his parents and his sister in honor of Charles, who graduated from the College in 1983. Senior essays will automatically be considered for this prize.

The Karen Osney Brownstein Prize: The Prize, a gift of approximately $2,000 per year, is to be awarded at the annual Honors Assembly to a graduating Columbia College senior who has written a single piece or a body of work in prose fiction or playwriting while at Columbia, so distinguished in its originality of concept and excellence of execution that it fairly demands the award, support and recognition that the prize intends. The Lea Baechler Prize: Awarded to a graduating senior (in CC, GS, or Barnard) for a critical essay on a topic relating to poetry.
