The Office works to ensure that Columbia's interactions with government and with its surrounding communities are sound, well informed, and mutually beneficial.

As a leading center of thought, as a major research university, and as a large urban institution, Columbia University associates its character and success with the well-being of both nation and neighborhood. Education, scholarship, creative activity, and scientific study all flourish in close engagement with many partners outside Columbia.

The Office tries to further the mutual understanding and supportive relationships necessary for the health of this collaboration by working with federal, state, and local governments, and with various community members.
