Many fencers have come to Columbia with little or no
experience and left as national champions, both in the NCAA and the USFA.
While this is due in a large part to coaching, drive, and ambition, don't
underestimate the value of fencing in New York. New York City is the capital
of many things, and fencing is one of them. The major fencing clubs in NYC
have produced countless National Champions, World Team and Olympic Team members.
It is no wonder that our alumni and current team members regularly have more
fencers on USA National Teams than any other university.
Typically,
Columbia fencers attend practice and receive top-level coaching at school.
Then, between one and five nights a week depending on their interest and needs,
they go in groups to the New York Athletic Club, New York Fencers Club or
Metropolis, all located within twenty minutes away from campus. There, they
can learn from the set of fencers that has dominated our national circuits
for decades. Not only is the intensity and experience exponentially different
from any other collegiate
setting in the country, but also you have the opportunity
to fence people with a variety of different coaches, backgrounds, and styles.
This variety will prepare you for national and international competition in
a way that just fencing collegiate fencers never could.
Fencing, as with everything else at Columbia, is not an ivory tower experience. It is a chance to apply what you are learning on campus in a real world setting. You'll learn what works and what doesn't from those who have mastered the sport. And it's only available in New York City.
