Admissions: the Ph.D. in French and Romance Philology
The Ph.D. program in French at Columbia University has consistently ranked among the top five in national surveys. It is designed for a career in productive scholarship. Students undergo rigorous and comprehensive training in literary history and theory before specializing in one area of research. The student body is remarkably international. In addition to the US and Canada, recent students have come from Belgium, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Romania, Sri-Lanka, Sweden and Switzerland.
The Department culls its graduate students from the best in the nation and around the world. Because the process is highly selective and admission extremely competitive, most accepted first-year students receive full funding, and all students beyond the first year are fully funded.
Fellowships are awarded in recognition of academic achievement and in expectation of scholarly success. Teaching and research experience are considered an important aspect of the training of graduate students. Thus, graduate fellowships include some teaching and research apprenticeship. Please visit the graduate section of our web site to learn more about the degree requirements.
High proficiency in reading, writing and speaking of French and English is expected, as well as a general knowledge of French literature.
In addition to the Graduate School's requirements, all students must submit
the following:
- A Statement of Academic Purpose,
- Three (3) letters of evaluation from
academic sources,
- A CV or résumé,
- A 10-15 page writing sample,
- A writing sample showing proficiency in French (also 10-15 pages),
- And GRE scores.
All international students whose native language is
not English or whose undergraduate degree is from an institution in a
country whose official language is not English, must submit scores of
the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS.
Recent graduates of the PhD program have secured teaching positions at the British Institute in Paris, Princeton University, the University of Chicago, Ohio State University, Reed College (Oregon), Spelman College (Georgia), Barnard College, Hunter College, George Washington University (DC) and the University of Washington (Seattle). Alumni of the program have recently been promoted to tenure at the University of Chicago, the University of California (Irvine), and the University of Virginia.
