Gilles Philippe has been a Professor of French stylistics at the Sorbonne Nouvelle since 2008 and currently chairs the Département de littérature et linguistique françaises et latines. His books include Le Discours en soi (Paris: Champion, 1997) and Sujet, verbe, complément. Le moment grammatical de la littérature française (Paris: Gallimard, 2002). In 2009, Professor Philippe edited with J. Piat La Langue littéraire. Une histoire de la prose en France de Gustave Flaubert à Claude Simon (Fayard). His last book, Le Français, dernière des langues. Histoire d’un procès littéraire was published by the Presses Universitaires de France in 2010 and awarded the Émile Faguet prize by the Académie française. Professor Philippe was also a coeditor of Bataille, Camus, Duras and Sartre for the "Bibliothèque de la Pléiade" (Gallimard). During his visiting professorship at Columbia in the spring 2012 semester, he will teach the graduate Stylistics course.
