Graduate Studies in French

At the graduate level, the Department of French offers the free-standing M.A. in French, the Ph.D. in French, and, in cooperation with the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society, the Ph.D. in French and Comparative Literature.

Approximately 50 graduate students with wide-ranging interests and areas of specialization are currently studying French at Columbia. Consistently ranked among the top five in national surveys, the Ph.D. program continues to attract the best students nationwide and from around the globe. The program is designed for a career in productive scholarship and has a long tradition of rigorous and comprehensive literary, historical and theoretical training, which continues to this day. Students lead active scholarly lives, participating in conferences, workshops and groups such as the Salons. Visit the Current Students section to learn more.

The diversity of the City of New York is reflected in Columbia's campus, and the Department of French and Romance Philology itself has a remarkably diverse student body. In addition to the US and Canada, recent students have come from Belgium, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Romania, Sri-Lanka, Sweden and Switzerland.

In recognition of our students' high caliber, most graduate students are fully funded. Fellowships are awarded in recognition of academic achievement and in expectation of scholarly success. Because teaching and research experience are considered an important aspect of the training of graduate students, graduate fellowships include some teaching and research apprenticeship.

Recent graduates of the PhD program have secured teaching positions at the British Institute in Paris, Princeton University, Ohio State University, the University of Chicago, Spelman College, Barnard College, Hunter College, George Washington University, and the University of Washington in Seattle. Alumni of the program have recently been promoted to tenure at the University of California, Irvine, the University of Chicago, and the University of Virginia.

The director of graduate studies is Souleymane Bachir Diagne (PhD, Sorbonne).
