Welcome

Welcome to the graduate programs of the department of French and Romance Philology.  Our programs at the M.A. and PhD levels offer rigorous training in French and francophone literature and culture.  The members of our faculty teach and work across all the major periods and themes and engage with a wide variety of interdisciplinary approaches.

The department is a cordial place to pursue graduate studies.  Students are encouraged to participate in the life of the department during and after their years of graduate study.  Our placement record is consistently excellent.

Please see the links on the left for specific program requirements. You may also want to review our selection of courses, as well as the resources available to current students. In addition to the Department's own faculty and the faculty of the Barnard French Department, there are many other scholars throughout Columbia University offering courses related to French and Francophone studies: Anthropology, Art History and Archeology, Classics, English, Film Studies, History, Institute for Comparative Literature and Society, MESAAS, Music, Philosophy, and Sociology.
