About the Undergraduate Programs

The Department offers two undergraduate majors: one in French literature, the other in French and Francophone Studies:

  • The French literature major is designed to give students an in-depth familiarity with the language, culture, and literature of France and the French-speaking world.
  • The French and Francophone Studies major is conceived as an interdisciplinary continuation of Columbia’s core course in Contemporary Civilization: it seeks to examine key concepts and dichotomies such as universalism vs. exceptionalism, tradition vs. modernity, citizenship and national unity from their origin in the French Enlightenment to their present status in France and the French-speaking world.

To learn more about the degree requirements for the two majors, visit our undergraduate section.
