LBGC's High-Spirited Start to the New Year

The Lesbian Bisexual Gay Coalition (LBGC) is fiercer and stronger than ever this year. Combining the lessons of last year and incorporating new ideas, we have directed our focus on community-building and public awareness. With the high-energy of new students and eagerness of returnees, we have been able to envision a semester's worth of high-spirited activities.

Before the year commenced officially, Jason Klein, treasurer, and Wayne Steward, secretary, planned an entire weekend worth of events for incoming first year students. We led a field trip to Wigstock, attended diversity seminars, and hosted a pizza social to welcome the new faces at Columbia and Barnard.

After the returning students arrived, we orchestrated fun field trips to Becoming Visible, the exhibit at the New York Public Library; the Center Orientation; the Clit Club; and Boy Bar. In addition to attending the First Friday and Third Saturday dances, LBGC members traveled the city far and wide for some good clean queer excitement and education.

We have made progress in our plans to convert the LBGC office into a center for queers on campus. At the suggestion of two first-year students, we coordinated an office clean-up to make our visitors and members feel more at home in 303 Earl Hall. We are in the process of decorating and adding research material to our files.

Affiliates and friends of LBGC have been convening their meetings in the LBGC office. Queers of Color will be holding their regular meeting in 303 on Thursdays at 9 pm. The Bisexuality Discussion Group is planning its first meeting.

To find out about our upcoming activities, come to our meetings at 7 pm Sundays in 303 Earl Hall; drop by our office between 4 and 11 pm Monday thru Thursday; or call 854-1488.
