Problems at Teachers College

This is an edited version of a letter that Ed Falterman, co-chair of LBGTC, sent to Teachers College officials last month:

Since the beginning of the fall term there has been a renewed and increasing pattern of vandalism of Lesbians, Bisexuals and Gays' posters within the residence halls, in particular Whittier Hall -- especially during the past month. LBGTC posters advertising three events have been vandalized: 1) October 6 General Membership Meeting; 2) BGLAD (Bisexual, Gay and Lesbian Awareness Days), October 7-15; and 3) October 20 General Membership Meeting. It has also been reported that a Residence Life staff member of your office has been seen vandalizing Lesbians, Bisexuals and Gays at Teachers College posters during the past month.

As you are aware, many [LBGTC] members feel marginalized at Teachers College. The vandalizing of LBGTC posters by other students and staff reinforces a homophobic and biphobic environment, within the residence halls and Teachers College at large, that is contrary to the mission and multicultural statements of Teachers College.

Representives of the Lesbians, Bisexuals and Gays at Teachers College would like to meet with you regarding the above incidents, and to request from your office what action and programs are planned during the academic year, for implementing the multicultural statements of the June 1994 Affirmative Action Handbook as it relates to promoting a welcoming and multicultural environment for Lesbians, Bisexuals and Gays at Teachers College within the residence halls.
