Community Spirit

1996 has arrived, and it's already thirty-one days old! Tempus certainly does fugit. With a new year comes new, and renewed, opportunities to take stock of where we are, where we've been, and where we wish to go. Columbia's lesbian, bisexual, and gay (lbg) community celebrates its third anniversary this month with a University-wide community meeting. The meeting, followed by a social, takes place on Thursday, February 15. It serves as a vehicle for the University's several lbg groups to come together to affirm a shared purpose -- a vibrant and dynamic lbg community; a campus community in which lesbians, gays, and bisexuals are welcome; a campus community that celebrates the talents and contributions of its lbg members; a campus community that celebrates the richness and diversity of all its members; and a campus community that, in the words of President Rupp, "embodies our aspirations and the character of Columbia at its best." Given the different constituent-agendas of our various lbg groups, building and sustaining a vibrant University-wide community is no small challenge. But I believe that we have the people, the talent, the energy, and the commitment necessary to make this effort a success. I salute all who strive to make this ideal a reality.
