Love Makes A Family Exhibit at Teachers College

A reception opening the twenty-two piece photo exhibit Love Makes A Family: Living in Lesbian and Gay Families at Teachers College's Main Hall Student Lounge was held on Monday, October 7. LBGTC chair Frank Susa opened the reception with a brief welcome and summary of the evolution of the exhibit. Invited speakers included Jim Beers, a recent Ph.D. graduate in clinical psychology, and Teachers College faculty members Rochelle Pope and Daniel Tamulonis. Pope was joined by her partner Amy Reynolds (herself a faculty member at Fordham University) and their daughter Justice, and Tamulonis was joined by his son Isaac.

Beers spoke about the desire of gay men to parent, drawing not only on his research in this area, but also upon his own experience as a parent, himself. He and his partner have a son. Both Pope and Reynolds, an interracial couple (Pope is black, Reynolds is white), spoke candidly about their decision to become parents, particularly of an interracial child. Rather than adopt a child, Pope and Reynolds consulted a sperm bank. Both believed that their child should have a biological connection to one of them. Reynolds is Justice's birth-mother via artificial insemination from an anonymous black donor.

In a lighthearted moment, Tamulonis spoke about how his sisters warned him that he and his partner's lives would change forever once they became parents. Tamulonis, who is white and also in an interracial union, confirmed that Isaac commands a big part of day-to-day life. Isaac, who is black, was adopted by Tamulonis and his black partner.

Other issues discussed included recognition of co-parent rights by local schools when both parents are lesbian or gay; support from family, friends, and colleagues; and the day-to-day life of being gay and lesbian parents. Each of the speakers expressed joy and satisfaction in their decisions to become parents.
