2008 Grad Fair
Tuesday, March 25 - Thursday, March 27

The Grad Fair provides the opportunity for all degree candidates to purchase regalia, announcements, rings, and diploma frames - all of the items you need for Commencement. Representatives from each company will be on hand to answer all of your questions.

Senior Survey
Thursday, April 24 - Monday, April 28
Take the Senior Survey online

In preparation for General Studies Class Day and University Commencement, you are required to complete the Senior Survey, also known as the Blue Card survey. The survey is an opportunity for you to give us important information such as the correct pronunciation of your name for the ceremony and the address to which we should send your copy of the The Owl, the GS alumni magazine.

The survey takes about 5 minutes to complete. Commencement tickets and grad packets cannot be released until the Senior Survey has been completed.

Please complete the survey by 12 noon, Monday, April 28, in order to receive your graduation packet, including Commencement tickets, at the Graduation Kick-off event (below).

Come join fellow seniors and start the countdown to graduation. Pick up tickets for Commencement, partake of a champagne toast to 2008 graduates, make a donation to the Senior Class Fund, buy tickets for the Senior Class Dinner Cruise, purchase GS jewelry and clothing, and enter a drawing for an exquisite piece of GS jewelry exclusively designed by GS Grad Philip Ehrlich (designer of the Columbia 250th Anniversary pins and the GS Owl that stands proudly in the GS Lounge).

The last brunch of the year will be held on the first day of reading week. Come out before you're bogged down with finals and celebrate the end of the academic year and the end of your undergraduate career.

Latino Graduation Cermony and Reception

Black Graduation Cermony and Reception

This ceremony serves as an intimate gathering for family, friends, alumni and members of the black Columbia community to celebrate the culture and accomplishments of the graduating class. Baccalaureate Service

Grads: Academic regalia required.
Guests: Families and friends of degree candidates are welcome. No tickets required.

The Baccalaureate Service is believed to have originated at Oxford University in 1432 when each bachelor was required to deliver a sermon in Latin as part of his academic exercise. Since the earliest universities in this country were founded primarily to educate ministers, the British practice of the Baccalaureate Service was continued. The tradition of the Baccalaureate Service at Columbia University began after the move to Morningside Heights in 1897. The Baccalaureate Service is now an interfaith, intercultural service celebrating the completion of each undergraduate's academic career, and is the opening event of Commencement week. The service is prepared and coordinated by the Office of the University Chaplain; the chaplain, president, and deans preside, students from each of the undergraduate schools participate.

Phi Beta Kappa Society Induction – GS Chapter

Senior inductees and their guests, by invitation only. Details about the ceremony will be sent to students invited for induction into Phi Beta Kappa.
Inductees: Academic regalia required.
Guests: No tickets, but inductees must RSVP with the number of guests.

Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest and most respected undergraduate academic honor society. The Society has pursued its mission of fostering and recognizing excellence in the liberal arts and sciences since 1776. A small percentage of GS’s top students are inducted into PBK each year through a confidential selection process conducted by the GS PBK chapter.

Grads: Academic regalia required, grads must report by 4:00 p.m. to to Roone Arledge Auditorium, Lerner Hall. Enter on Broadway side.
Alumni: Academic regalia required.
Guests: Tickets are not required

Presentation of degree candidates to the President and assembled faculty and guests. Reception following ceremony until 8:00 p.m. on Furnald Lawn.

All alumni are invited to attend the Class Day ceremony. This year, alumni from classes ending in '3 or '8 are invited to participate in the Class Day ceremony. GS Senior Dinner

The GS Senior Dinner will be aboard the beautiful Majestic Star yacht. View the glorious New York skyline while dining privately with your graduating class on this New York treasure. Enjoy the view, the food, the spirits, the dancing, and the company! Alumni, friends, and family in town for commencement are welcome.

Tickets for seniors are $70 per person or $60, with a minimum $5 donation to the Senior Gift. Tickets for guests are $80 (due to limited space, we cannot guarantee we will have enough guest tickets... be sure to get your tickets early!). The ticket price includes a three-course buffet dinner, open bar, music, and Exit Interview: The After Party (TBA). Tickets may be purchased online. For more information, view the Facebook event.

Columbia 254th Commencement

Grads: Academic regalia required; assemble in front of the Mathematics Building (117th St. & Broadway entrance) by 9:15 a.m. Candidate procession begins at 9:30 a.m. and academic procession at 10:30 a.m.
Guests: Tickets required. Gates to campus open at 9:00 a.m. to ticket holders.

It is during the Commencement ceremony that your degree is officially conferred. All of Columbia’s 17 schools participate in this event. The Commencement speaker is traditionally the president of the Columbia. The ceremony includes awards to honorary degree recipients and outstanding Columbia teachers. If it rains, Commencement still takes place outside.

GS Post-Commencement Reception

Grads and Guests: Open to all GS grads and their guests. No tickets required.

Here you may meet your advisors and deans, get your official Columbia alumni card, and arrange to meet your family after the Commencement ceremony. May grads may pick up diplomas at this event until 1:30 p.m.; diplomas not picked up at this event may be picked up in 210 Kent beginning May 22; if diplomas are not picked up within two weeks, they are mailed to graduates.
