Academic Standards

Grade Point Average
Medical schools expect successful applicants to possess an excellent grounding in the premedical sciences. In the first instance, the quality of a student’s preparation is measured by the grades earned in premedical courses. For this reason, postbaccalaureate premedical students are held to high academic standards. At a minimum, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.00 to remain in the program. Students can view current information about their Columbia academic records at https://www.ais.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/ssv/ssol.

Character
Medical schools likewise have high expectations of an applicant's character. Students in the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program are expected to comport themselves in a manner that demonstrates their fitness for a career as a physician. This includes completing course work in a timely fashion, making steady and substantial academic progress, observing deadlines, and generally conducting oneself in a way that gives confidence in one's integrity and ability to assume the responsibilities of medical practice.

Academic Policies
In addition to these requirements, students in the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program are also subject to the academic policies of the School of General Studies and in Facts About Columbia Essential To Students (FACETS).
