Clinical & Research
Experience
Located in New York City, one of the leading health-science communities in the world, Postbac Premed students
have access to limitless opportunities to gain clinical and research experience at major medical research
centers, top-tier medical schools, and the largest municipal hospital system in the United States.
Requirement
While not required for admission to medical schools, most if not all applicants to medical school have had some experience in and exposure to healthcare settings. Postbac Premed students are required to complete 120 volunteer hours of clinical and research work in fields such as endocrinology, genetic testing, oral surgery, and emergency medicine.
Medical schools also look especially
to applicants’ willingness to undertake volunteer
work in a clinical setting as evidence of their
fitness for and motivation toward a career as a
physician.

Committee Support
All students should begin volunteering as early as possible in their programs of study in order to complete the required hours by the time of their committee interviews. Ideally, students will complete as many hours of volunteer service as possible before the orgo/bio year in order to reduce other obligations during the most demanding phase of their studies. Experience in a clinical setting will make you a more competitive applicant for medical school and demonstrate your commitment to healthcare and your comfort with the "blood and guts" aspects of a career in medicine.
Premedical Committee support (in the form of a letter of recommendation) for application to medical school and other allied health schools requires that you complete 120 hours of work in a clinical or research setting by the end of May of your orgo/bio year. At the very least, 90 hours of this requirement must be in a clinical setting.
The
Importance of Volunteer Work
Volunteer work also
helps Postbacs decide whether a career in medicine
is really the right choice for them. Many students
also find that service as a volunteer helps them
keep their ultimate goal in sight while their attention
is fixed on the immediate demands of the premedical
curriculum.
