Moji Baratloo, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Architecture
Received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the
University of Michigan (1976); attended the University of Denmark
(1977) and received a Master of Architecture from the University of
Michigan (1978). She is a Registered Architect in New York State and
is a principal in the firm Baratloo-Balch Architects. In 1990 she
received a Project Award and an Interiors Award from the New York
Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. She has held
visiting positions at various universities and curently teaches at
Parsons Insitiute of Design in addition to Columbia. She was awarded
a Fellow in Architecture by the New York Foundation for the Arts and
a New York State Council on the Arts Research Grant in1990. She has
received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1989 and
1993. Her work has been exhibited widely and she has published the
study entitled Angst: Cartography (1989).
Michael Conard, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Architecture
Received a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Architecture
from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1980,1981); attended the
Architectural Association (1991) and received a Master of Science in
Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University (1993). He is
a Registered Architect in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York
and holds an NCARB registration. He was a principal in private
practice as principal from 1983-91. He currently prepares and manages
special projects for the New York City Housing Authority and teaches
in the Urban Design Program at Pratt Insitute in addition to
Columbia. He has recieved grants from the National Endowment for the
Arts and New York State Council for the Arts. Recently he was an
organizer of the Beyond the Box project and exhibition on the future
New York City superstore.
Dennis Ferris, Adjunct Associate Professor of Urban Planning.
Received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Architecture from
the University of Michigan (1970, 1980); and a Master of Science in
Urban Planning from Columbia University (1985). He was a principal in
the firm of Kwartler and Ferris and since 1993 has been Queens
Borough Director of the New York City Department of City Planning.
Andrea Kahn, Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture
Received a Bachelor of Arts from Bennington College (1975) and
a Master of Architecture from Princeton University (1983). She has
taught design at the University of Cincinatti and currently teaches
at the University of Pennsylvania in addition to Columbia. She has
also held visiting positions at various universities and has lectured
widely in the United States. In 1989 she received a Graham Foundation
Individual Grant. She has published widely in architectural journals,
and was the Contributing Editor of Drawing/Building/Text: Essays in
Architectural Theory (1991)
Brian McGrath, Adjunt Assistant Professor of Architecture
Received a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University
(1979) and a Master of Architecture from Princeton University (1981).
He is a Registered Architect in New York State. He is currently
teaching at the Parsons Institute of Design in addition to Columbia.
He is a founding member of PathArchitecture, an interdisciplinary
studio working on projects at various scales in built and media
environments. His work has been exhibited widely and his book,
Transparent Cities(1994) is currently being reformatted into an
interactive

Richard Plunz, Professor of Architecture
Received a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Architecture, and
Master of Architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1965,
1966, 1967). He has taught at Rensselaer, and the Pennsylvania State
University and has held visiting positions at the Katholieke
Universiteit Leuven and the Politechnico di Torino.He served as
Chairman of the division of Architecture at Columbia from 1977-1980
and has been Director of the Urban Design Program since 1992. He has
conducted long-term research on architecture and urbanism in Italy
and Turkey as well as the United States and he has received numerous
grant support including the Aga Khan Program for Islamic
Architecture, the New York State Council for the Arts, the National
Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities,
and the J. M. Kaplan Fund. In 199 he received the Andrew J,. Thomas
Award from the American Institute of Architects for his work in
housing. Among his books are Housing Form and Public Policy in the
United States (198 ); Design and the Public Good. Selected Writings ,
1930-1980 , by Serge Chermayeff (1982); and A History of Housing in
New York City. Dwelling Type and Social Change in the American
Metropolis (1990).
Grahame Shane, Adjunct Professor of Architecture
Received a Diploma in Architecture from the Architectural
Association (1968); a Master of Architecture in urban design from
Cornell University (1971); and a Phd. in architectural and urban
history from Cornell University (1978). He has taught design at the
Architectural Association, Bennington College, Cornell University and
Rice Universities. He is currently teaching at Cooper Union and the
University of Pennsylvania in addition to Columbia. He has lectured
extensively in Europe and the United States on architecture and
urbanism. He has published widely in architectural journals and is a
regular contributor to Recent articles include Casabella 359, Sites
#25, Design Book Review #17 & #26, Mortal City 1995, L.A. Forum
1995 and Columbia Newsline.
Victoria Benatar Urban, Adjunt Assistant Professor of Architecture
Recieved a Diploma in Architecture from the Universidad
Central de Venezuela (1983) and a Master of Science in Architecture
and Urban Design from Columbia University (1994). She is a Registered
Architect and member of the Colegio de Ingenieros de Venezuela. Her
professional practice in Caracas has included urban studies, housing,
private offices and residences, interior and furniture design, and
digital imaging (1986-1994). She currently teaches in the Urban
Design Program at Columbia University and in the Architecture and
Enviromental Design departament at Parsons School of
