ECHO CHAMBER: TRACES OF THE UNCONCIOUS The Morningside Heights area comprises of institutions, monumental architectures and individual residential landmarks. The echo chamber is created by Morningside Park and Riverside Park enclosed west and east side, 122nd street and 110th street enclosed north and south. This echo chamber is the constitution of a space - theatre-like. The theatrical frame coincides with existing parts of the urban room and indicates only the area of cultural productions or potential limits of any activities engaged within this field.
ECHOES
The echoes that rebound in this urban room emitted from
point generators-cultural institutions-echoed from point to
point in songlines, now involving one set of points-e.g....
religion related festival-now another songline-river
festival, congress or youthfest-each songline a stellar
constellation of points that construct the different
provisional surfaces of this urban room.
The traces of echos left on the soft site(only along Broadway) will be used as a coding system in both conceptually and physically. In the conceptual part, each line of echo contains different information from different matrix, for exemple, the riligious matrix, the future development matrix, etc. Each trace will be presented as the event space from the source it came from. In the physical part, the trace will bring a segment from the character they pass by, for example, St. John the Devine, etc.
LOCAL LINKAGE
The "Wheel Diagram" is created in order to define the
mechanics of the Campus Area (along Broadway). This diagram
merges with the "echoes" creating the final composite
connecting unconcious metrix of echoes with local context.
GLOBAL LINKAGE
Columbia University provides the global linkage through the
internet. Therefore, the area has already connected to the
global system. Electronic Screens are added to the softsite
visually bringing the global information to the area.
PLANNING OF THE ECHOES-PROBE

The broader exit and entrance are created for the better
accessibility to the underground transportation system which
connected to the new tower. The tower act as a gateway to
the area including the vertical market place, cultural
space-religion related activities-conference room for local
meeting-exhibition space- merging the dinamic of local event
(multiple identities) with metropolitan system..
2 Resurfacing/programming along Broadway:
By using the pattern of the echoes-songlines, the
underdeveloped building along Broadway will be resurfaced
and reprogram to juxtapose with the identities of each
songline, in order to create sense of place.
